Camera System

Main Camera

Nikon Z8

Backup Camera

Nikon Z7ii

I am using a Nikon Z cameras for many reasons: the look (guys you have to be in love with your camera haha), the feeling of the camera in my hands, the buttons, the colours and image quality, the screen ( I am not a fan of the fully articulated screen), the resolution at 45MPs, the system menu which I love, the dynamic range with the native ISO at 64 and the weather sealing

My Z7ii took many swims while shooting waves very close, I used it under hard conditions like -25 degrees Celsius, under heavy rain for days, I dealt with humidity, mud, fell down several times and the camera never failed me. The battery life is amazing, the weight and size are great, I cannot complain. Is it the perfect camera, definitely not like any other camera on the market, but this is the perfect camera for me and I can only say good words. I recently put my hand on the Z8, mostly for the sensor shield and other reasons which is such a game changer when I have to change lenses under the rain, snow or windy environment.

My Lenses

This is the kit I have been using the last two years, covering a range from 14mm to 400mm with 3 lenses. The wide angle is the lens I use the most of the time. My combo kit for multiday hike is pairing the 14-24mm f/2.8 with the 24-120mm f/4. Depending on the hike and the weight, I carry in my pack, sometimes I also put the 100-400mm in my bag but I think twice because the lens itself is about 1.5kg.

Best Hiking Lens

NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S

Most used lens

NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S

Telephoto Lens (when weight is not a problem)

NIKKOR Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S

The Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 is so underrated. I went for this one instead of the 24-70 f/4 for the extra reach it has to offer without compromising the image quality. Also, I don’t need to change lenses if I want to go up to 100mm, and sometimes it allows me to leave the telephoto which is a good extra weight. This lens is definitely in my backpack, and the lens of choice if I have to go with a lighter pack.

My Essentials

Memory Cards AngelBird

I have been using AngelBird for already 3 years. I never had any issues or corrupted data. They survived from humidity, condensation, and rain, my camera took some swims while doing seascape, and even on a multiday hike in winter at -30 degrees Celsius, my SD Cards and CF Express never failed me. Also for the price for the quality is very hard to beat. On the performance side, it’s very fast on writing and reading the data no matter what it is videos, timelapses or photos bursts.

Nikon EN-EL15-C

I use the Nikon EN-EL15-C because they last long enough and have 3 of them. Third-party brands are not as performant than original, maybe you can take that into consideration before buying.

Nisi True Color CPL & 3 Stop ND

The only polarizer I use and which is always on my 24-120mm lens. Whenever I decide to start a timelapse, I also pair it with the 3 stop ND filter. From my experience, they are the most scratch-resistant filters and the ones that represent real-life colours the best. I tried other brands and I was very disappointed because they either don’t represent the colours or get scratches very easy. I am using Nisi brand for already 2years and I am very happy with the quality.
